41st Annual Celebration: August 3-5, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta Announces Initial Details for 2018 Celebration

Pittsburgh, PA (May 16, 2018) — The EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta today announced initial details for its 41st celebration on August 3-5, which will include three fun-filled days of powerboat races, national music acts, free family activities and familiar fan favorites. In addition, this year’s event will spotlight the Regatta’s long-time support of local programs dedicated to protecting and enhancing our region’s waterways.

“EQT is proud to provide the Pittsburgh region with an event that takes full advantage of everything our great city has to offer,” said Natalie Cox, EQT Corporate Director, Communications. “For 41 years, this beloved summer tradition has brought people from near and far to celebrate Pittsburgh and its magnificent three rivers. There’s something for everyone and this year’s festivities won’t disappoint.”

The annual land and water festival, which is the largest inland regatta in the nation and one of the tristate region’s largest summer events, draws more than 500,000 people to Pittsburgh every year.

“We are creating an exciting lineup of activities around the city’s three rivers, which will include exhilarating new additions, as well as some re-invented Regatta traditions,” said John Bonassi, Chairman of the Board, Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta, Inc. “A signature element of the Regatta has always been the ALCOSAN 3 Rivers Proud Anything that Floats Race. This year, we are challenging teams to bring their craziest, zaniest ideas so that we can make this year’s race the best one yet!”

ALCOSAN 3 Rivers Proud Anything that Floats Race

The ALCOSAN 3 Rivers Proud Anything That Floats Race sets sail on Saturday, August 4. Teams will test their nautical know-how as they build homemade boats that, they hope, will stay afloat.

“ALCOSAN is proud to sponsor one of the Regatta’s favorite traditions. There’s no better way to showcase and enjoy our Region’s three rivers, which ALCOSAN works so hard to protect,” said Arletta Scott Williams, ALCOSAN Executive Director.

Last year, ALCOSAN staff volunteers took home the award for most creative boat after building a vessel that resembled toilets with seats for paddles. “We’re challenging other teams to take the plunge and see if they have what it takes to stay afloat,” said Williams.

Starting today, teams can officially enter the race by visiting yougottaregatta.org. [Download Registration Form Here]

While the competition is all in good fun, it’s for a good cause, too. The teams that win fastest vessel, “greenest” vessel and most creative boat design will receive up to $2,500 for a charity of their choice. There will also be an honorable mention award to the fastest sinker.

Sugar Ray and Randy Houser Hit the Regatta Main Stage

In addition to entertaining activities on the water, there will be plenty of live music on the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta Main Stage.  American rock band Sugar Ray will “Fly” into Point State Park on Friday, August 3. The band first rocked their way to the radio in the 90s with popular singles like, “Every Morning,” “Someday” and “When It’s Over.” Fans can look forward to jamming to some of their favorite and greatest 90s hits.

Country music singer and songwriter Randy Houser will hit the main stage on Sunday, August 5. With three consecutive No. 1 hits, “How Country Feels,” “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight” and “Goodnight Kiss,” Houser has made an impression on the country music scene. Prior to hitting the top charts as an artist, Houser received multiple nominations for the CMA and ACM and co-wrote songs for major country music names, including Trace Adkins, Justin Moore and Chris Young.

“We have three jam-packed days of music, boating, food, entertainment and fun to look forward to in August. This is just a glimpse of what we have in store.  Look for more exciting announcements in the coming weeks,” said Derek Weber, President LionHeart Event Group. “The Regatta is a summer calendar staple. Thanks to the tremendous support of EQT, along with the Colcom Foundation, ALCOSAN, Highmark Health and PITT OHIO, we’re able to not only make the event bigger and better every year, but also provide free, quality entertainment for people of all ages.”

Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta Grant Program

While the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta is best known for producing two of Pittsburgh’s beloved summer celebrations—the Regatta and the City’s official Fourth of July event—the mission of the nonprofit organization has always been to develop and maintain programs devoted to protecting and enhancing our region’s waterways.

Each year, the Board of Directors awards grants to nonprofit causes that promote clean rivers and recreational use of our region’s waterways. This year, the Board of Directors is going to let the public help them decide what programs to support.

“Everyone knows about the Regatta, but what they might not know is that we have a distinguished Board of Directors that works year-round to not only plan one of the city’s largest events, but to also protect and enhance our region’s waterways,” said Bonassi. “That’s why we are really focused on highlighting that mission during this year’s event and promoting the important programs that truly help protect our three rivers, which are so vital to our region.”

Nonprofit organizations can apply for a grant by downloading an application at www.yougottaregatta.org/about. All applications must be submitted by June 30. In July, the Board of Directors will announce the finalists and instructions for how people can vote for their favorite project. The selected projects will be announced during a special presentation at this year’s Regatta.
